John Higgins goes head to head with good friend Anthony McGill in an all-Scottish British Open semi-final on Saturday.

The first of the last-four clashes at The Centaur in Cheltenham pits the four-time British Open champion against a player appearing in his first ranking semi-final for nearly three years.

Higgins is just two wins away from getting his hands on the Clive Everton trophy, and equalling Steve Davis’ record of five titles.

The Wizard, who was runner-up to Mark Selby 12 months ago, has got stronger as the week has progressed, having recovered from 3-1 down to scrape past Mark Davis in the opening round.

He then overturned a 3-2 deficit to edge out Jack Lisowski, before defeating reigning World champion Zhao Xintong, Ben Mertens and Louis Heathcote for the loss of just five frames.

Through to his 89th ranking semi-final, Higgins now looks to advance to his 59th final – and seventh at the British Open.

Standing in his way is a player he knows well in McGill, one of his many practice partners, and a player who inflicted a 6-0 whitewash in their most recent encounter at the 2018 Players Championship.

The former world number 12 has enjoyed a welcome return to form this week, having slipped out of the top 50 in the WST rankings.

McGill dropped just four frames in beating Gary Wilson, Oliver Lines and in-form Wuhan Open champion Xiao Guodong.

He then recovered from 3-1 down to defeat Stan Moody 5-3 in the quarter-finals, to reach his first ranking semi-final since the 2022 Northern Ireland Open.

The two-time ranking event winner now looks to progress to a first final since the 2017 Indian Open, when he was beaten 5-1 by Higgins.

A showdown with either Selby or Shaun Murphy awaits the winner of this battle of the Scots in Sunday’s final.

The match breaks off at 1pm BST on Saturday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at The Centaur in Cheltenham.
