British Open Snooker 2021 Day Six Preview and Order of Play: Last eight vie to reach the final

Slessor sees off Carter

Ali Carter became the second player to make a maximum break at the 2021 British Open, but was beaten by Elliot Slessor in the Last 16.

Just four days after John Higgins had produced a 147 at the Morningside Arena, Carter followed suit with his third career maximum.

However, it would prove to be The Captain’s only meaningful contribution to the contest as he went down 3-1 to a resurgent Slessor.

The feat means Carter is now in line to share the £5,000 high break bonus with Higgins – who was beaten 3-1 by Ricky Walden in the Third Round earlier in the day.

A memorable day for Slessor saw him firstly knock out Judd Trump 3-2 – a result which saw Mark Selby regain the world number one spot.

The Tynesider then produced breaks of 76, 74 and 63 on his way to victory over Carter to reach his fourth career ranking Quarter-Final.

Slessor will face Zhou Yuelong in Saturday’s Quarter-Finals after the Chinese star edged out home favourite Joe O’Connor in a deciding frame.

Zhou began the day with a 3-1 win over Matthew Selt before producing a high break of 109 on his way to defeating Leicester’s O’Connor in the evening session.

Mark Williams is the only top 16 ranked player to progress to the Quarter-Finals after he survived a scare from 22-year-old Zhang Jiankang.

Zhang led 2-1 and looked to be heading for victory, only to miss a routine black off the spot in frame four, allowing Williams to make a nerveless 55 clearance before dominating the decider.

The Welsh veteran will now take on Ricky Walden on Saturday after he followed up his 3-1 win over Higgins by defeating amateur Ross Muir by the same scoreline.

Jimmy Robertson produced a dominant display to see off Stephen Maguire 3-0, firing in breaks of 126 and 74 along the way.

David Gilbert remains in the running for back-to-back ranking titles after he recorded successive 3-0 wins over Andrew Pagett and Hammad Miah.

Lukas Kleckers became the first German to reach the Last 16 of a ranking event but saw his run ended by Lu Ning – who prevailed a comfortable 3-0 winner.

Gary Wilson continued his resurgent run of form by defeating Xu Si 3-0 before edging out Iran’s Hossein Vafaei 3-2 but a superb 95 break in the decider.

Saturday sees the Quarter-Finals take place in the afternoon before the Semi-Finals follow later in the evening.
