World number one Ronnie O’Sullivan has pulled out of the 2023 British Open for medical reasons.
O’Sullivan was due to face Jimmy Robertson in the opening round of the televised ranking event on Monday, but has withdrawn on medical grounds and is replaced in the draw by Steven Hallworth.
The British Open runs from September 25 to October 1 at the Centaur in Cheltenham and features 64 players competing for £478,000 in prize money.
O’Sullivan clinched a fifth Shanghai Masters title last week in his first competitive outing of the season, defeating reigning World Champion Luca Brecel in the final.
With ‘The Rocket’ absent from season’s third ranking event, Brecel now has the opportunity to become world number one for the first time.
O’Sullivan, 47, had also withdrawn from the Championship League and European Masters earlier this summer and is next due to appear at the English Open on home soil in Essex from October 2-8.
