Shaun Murphy locks horns with Anthony McGill on Sunday for the right to be crowned the 2025 British Open champion in Cheltenham.

It is a battle between the former World champion and the two-time ranking event winner at The Centaur, with the Clive Everton trophy and top prize of £100,000 up for grabs.

Both players are aiming to end personal silverware droughts; Murphy’s last triumph coming at the 2023 Championship League, and McGill’s at the Shoot Out six years previously.

Though the Magician leads the head-to-head 8-4, including each of the last three meetings, a good omen for the Glaswegian Gladiator is that he has beaten him on the way to winning both his ranking titles.

Murphy, who briefly dropped out of the world’s top 16 recently, has beaten three former World champions to reach his 27th ranking final – and first in two years – in Neil Robertson, Judd Trump and Mark Selby.

While taken to a decider by world number one Trump, each of the 2005 Crucible king’s other five victories this week have all seen him drop just a single frame.

The latest of these came in the semi-finals on Saturday, when he ruthlessly swept reigning British Open champion Selby aside 6-1.

Murphy now looks to complete the set of triumphs in ITV-televised events, having previously won the World Grand Prix, Champion of Champions, Players Championship and Tour Championship.

Standing in his way is a player aiming to become only the third Scottish winner of the British Open, after Stephen Hendry and John Higgins.

Like Murphy, McGill has also enjoyed a welcome upturn in fortunes this week. Once ranked as high as 12th in the world, the Glaswegian has slipped to 57th and precariously close to the potential threat of relegation.

However, the former World Championship semi-finalist has bounced back to move to the brink of earning his joint-biggest career payday, having also earned £100,000 for his run to the last four at the Crucible five years ago.

McGill is set for his first ranking event final appearance in eight years – and fourth overall – having beaten multiple ranking event winners in Gary Wilson and Xiao Guodong, along with four-time World champion and compatriot John Higgins in the semi-finals.

There will be a new name on the Clive Everton trophy this year, and whoever’s it is will be determined over the best of 19 frames at The Centaur in Cheltenham on Sunday.

Play gets under way at 1pm BST with the opening eight frames, before playing to a conclusion from 7pm.
