Championship League Snooker 2023 | Day Five Preview and Order of Play

Mark Williams headlines Group Six with Ken Doherty also in action on day five of the 2023 Championship League in Leicester.

The two former world champions will collide at the Morningside Arena on Friday 20 years after their epic Crucible final, which Williams narrowly won 18-16.

World number 10 Williams is set to embark on his 32nd season as a professional – one more than Doherty – and will be eager to return to the winner’s circle having landed just two ranking titles since his third World Championship triumph in 2018.

An ever-present in the invitational Championship League event, the Welshman was runner-up to Kyren Wilson in 2021 and reached the semi-finals in 2011 and 2016.

Meanwhile, 1997 Crucible king Doherty will be eager to build momentum, having won just seven of the 23 matches he played last season.

The Darlin’ of Dublin and Williams are joined by Welshman Dylan Emery and Poland’s Daniel Holoyda in Group Six, while Group 27 is headlined by former Welsh Open champion Jordan Brown.

The Antrim Ferrari has reached Stage Two in two of the three previous ranking editions of this event. He faces competition from Shootout runner-up Julien Leclercq, as well as veteran Barry Pinches and Joshua Thomond – a late replacement for Marco Fu.

The groups are contested over a round-robin format, with all matches played as best of four frames, with three points awarded for a win and one point for a draw.

Group positions are determined by points scored, frame difference and then head-to-head results between players who were tied. Places that are still tied are then determined by the highest break made in the group.

Play gets underway at 12pm BST at the Morningside Arena in Leicester on Friday.
