Kyren Wilson cruises through to Championship League final day

The Warrior is eyeing a first UK Championship semi-final appearance.

Reigning champion Kyren Wilson resumes his bid to complete a hat-trick of Championship League titles as Stage Two continues in Leicester on Wednesday.

The Warrior came out on top in both events in Milton Keynes last season, beating Judd Trump and Mark Williams respectively.

Wilson subsequently became only the second player to win back-to-back titles since the tournament’s inception in 2008, after John Higgins achieved the feat in 2017 and 2018.

The world number six is now looking to join Trump on three titles and made a strong start to his bid in Stage One at the Morningside Arena; topping Group 16 with a 100 per cent record.

He will target more of the same as he headlines Group D alongside Matthew Stevens, Oliver Lines and Ken Doherty.

Two-time World finalist Stevens won this event back in 2011, beating Shaun Murphy in the final, and would love a repeat 10 years on.

Meanwhile, 1997 Crucible king Doherty is looking to reach the final day for the second time in three editions. As for Lines, he will aim to capitalise on his good fortune after topping Group 13 ahead of Peter Devlin, having compiled the higher break of the two players.

Over in Group C, 2015 finalist Mark Davis bids to go the extra step six years on, but faces competition from Noppon Saengkham, teenager Bai Langning and World Seniors champion David Lilley.

It is fair to say that Davis and Saengkham certainly earned the right to get to make it to Stage Two.

The Battler from Hastings beat two-time ranking event winner Anthony McGill on the way to finishing at the summit of Group 12, while world number 44 Saengkham topped Group Nine ahead of four-time Crucible champion Higgins.

The players face each other once in the group with all matches contested over the best of four frames.

Each player will receive three points for a win and one for a draw; the one with the most will top the group and secure a place in Stage Two of the competition.
