Ronnie O’Sullivan eyes a place in the China Open quarter-finals when he does battle with Noppon Saengkham in Taiyuan on Wednesday.

The Rocket is aiming to progress to the last eight of a ranking event for only the second time this year, having also achieved the feat on his run to the World Open final in Yushan in March.

O’Sullivan won the first two editions of this tournament under its current entitlement in 1999 and 2000, though he has only reached the semi-finals on a single occasion since.

Despite three successive centuries, the seven-time world champion was beaten 6-4 by Kyren Wilson at this stage of the Shanghai Masters.

Another early exit from this event looked possible when he trailed 2-0 against Jackson Page, but he reeled off the next six frames – completing what was eventually a comfortable 6-2 victory with a break of 100.

O’Sullivan has won three of his four previous meetings with Saengkham, though the popular Thai came out on top in their most recent encounter at this stage of the 2023 World Grand Prix.

The world number 45 has endured a mixed start to this season. He beat Michael Holt and Elliot Slessor to qualify for this event, and progressed to the final day at the Championship League, but lost in the qualifying rounds for the Wuhan Open, English Open and Shenzhen Open.

Nevertheless, he is fresh from claiming the scalp of the world number one in the opening round in Taiyuan, following his impressive 6-3 victory over Judd Trump.

Toppling another big name in O’Sullivan would see Saengkham match his best performance at the China Open, where he was a quarter-finalist 10 years ago.

A chance to play either Shaun Murphy or Xiao Guodong is the prize on offer to whoever progresses from this clash and into the last eight.

The match breaks off at 12.30pm BST (7.30pm local time) on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Riverside Sports Centre in Taiyuan.
