O’Sullivan crashes out of English Open after shock He defeat

Ronnie O’Sullivan begins his ninth English Open campaign with a tricky test against He Guoqiang at Brentwood Centre on Tuesday.

The Rocket has been an ever-present at the season’s opening Home Nations event since its inception in 2016; lifting the Steve Davis trophy the following year, while reaching a further two semi-finals.

O’Sullivan has also reached the last four of two tournaments this season at the Shanghai Masters and inaugural Xi’an Grand Prix – losing out to the eventual champions on both occasions in Judd Trump and Kyren Wilson respectively.

And the seven-time World champion is fresh from a run to the quarter-finals at the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters, where he eventually succumbed to Si Jiahui.

Another Chinese opponent stands in his way here, and it has the potential to be a banana skin for O’Sullivan, who was beaten 3-0 by He in the Championship League at the start of the season.

The 24-year-old is embarking on his second campaign as a professional, having made great strides in his first year and already climbed into the top 64 of the WST rankings.

The Chinese beat the likes of Elliot Slessor and Barry Hawkins on the way to reaching the British Open quarter-finals; his best performance in a ranking event to date.

He also got to the last 16 of this tournament and the Wuhan Open, and came within two frames of making his Crucible debut – losing out 10-8 to Dominic Dale in the final qualifying round.

Nevertheless, he claimed many scalps during his maiden campaign, with Wilson, Mark Williams, Ryan Day and Hossein Vafaei among the players he defeated.

And although his victory over O’Sullivan was behind closed doors at the Championship League, the mere fact he has beaten the Rocket – over a shorter format, too – will give him the confidence and belief he can do so again.

A showdown with either Stephen Maguire or Bulcsu Revesz in the last 32 of this year’s English Open.

The match gets under way at 7pm BST and will be contested over the best of seven frames at Brentwood Centre.
