Two-ton Trump through to Players Championship quarter-finals

Robertson and Bingham face off for the second time in the space of a fortnight (Lo Ping Fai/Xinhua/Alamy Live News)

Neil Robertson and Stuart Bingham do battle once again as the Players Championship first round continues in Telford on Tuesday.

It promises to be an intriguing first full day of action at the Telford International Centre, where four former Players Championship winners are joined by a further two World champions and two debutants.

The most eye-catching tie of day two sees a repeat of the World Grand Prix final earlier this month, with Robertson and Bingham locking horns once more.

That showpiece was very one-sided in Hong Kong with the Australian completing a 10-0 demolition of his opponent, becoming the first player to win multiple two-session ranking finals.

Robertson now turns his attention towards winning his third silverware of this season, and second at the Players Championship, having triumphed three years ago.

Meanwhile, despite that humiliating defeat, the run to the final secured Bingham’s return to elite 16-man event for the first time since 2021.

Also meeting for the second time in as many events are former winners Shaun Murphy and Barry Hawkins.

The Magician won this tournament when it was the Players Tour Championship Finals in 2011, and again in 2023, while he also boasts fond memories of Telford, where he won the 2008 UK Championship.

Masters champion Murphy ran out a 4-1 winner when they players collided at the World Grand Prix, avenging the 6-2 defeat he suffered against Hawkins in this season’s UK Championship quarter-finals.

The Hawk, who also triumphed during the Players Tour Championship Finals era in 2014, was runner-up to Robertson three years ago. He would love to go one better, having also been a beaten finalist at last month’s German Masters.

World number one Judd Trump begins his quest for a record third Players Championship title against debutant Lei Peifan.

The Ace, who won the tournament in 2017 and 2020, is also targeting his fourth silverware of the campaign, having already triumphed at the Shanghai Masters, Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters and UK Championship.

Nevertheless, he will not be taking anything for granted against Lei, who was a surprise winner at this season’s Scottish Open.

Mark Selby faces another player making his Players Championship bow in Wuhan Open runner-up – and Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters semi-finalist – Si Jiahui.

The Jester is looking to add his name to the roll of honour, and build on his successes at the British Open, Championship League and Welsh Open this term.

Play gets under way at 1pm GMT on Tuesday with all matches contested over the best of 11 frames at the Telford International Centre.
