Neil Robertson rumbles Ronnie O’Sullivan at the Players Championship

O’Sullivan and Robertson do battle once more

Ronnie O’Sullivan and Neil Robertson renew their rivalry in what promises to be a mouth-watering Players Championship quarter-final showdown on Thursday.

The Rocket and Thunder will collide for the third time is many months when they do battle at Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton.

They meet for the second Cazoo Series event in succession having contested the World Grand Prix final before Christmas, with O’Sullivan recovering from 7-5 down to win 10-8 and end his 16-month wait for ranking silverware.

But Robertson exacted his revenge at the Masters last month, prevailing 6-4 on the way to lifting a second title.

In fact, the Australian has now been victorious in three of the four most recent meetings between the players.

Although, the Rocket was the winner in their only previous Players Championship encounter; soaring to a 10-4 victory in the 2019 final and compiling the 1,000th century of his illustrious career.

The Thunder, who turns 40 on Friday, overcame fatigue following a recent positive COVID-19 test to see off Kyren Wilson 6-4 in the opening round, making two centuries along the way.

A three-time runner-up in this event, the reigning English Open and Masters champion is looking to go the extra step this year and claim his third silverware of the season.

O’Sullivan was also in impressive scoring form during his 6-3 win over Judd Trump in the battle of the two-time champions on Tuesday.

The Rocket had lost each of his three previous meetings with the Ace – winner of this tournament in 2017 and 2020 – but he ended that unwanted streak with a century and three further breaks over 80.

Having lifted this trophy in 2018 and 2019, he will now look to become the first player to win the title on three occasions.

The winner of this tie will set up a semi-final showdown with either reigning champion John Higgins or Jimmy Robertson.

The match gets under way at 7pm GMT on Thursday with the match contested over the best of 11 frames at Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton.
