Ali Carter and David Grace lock horns for the second time this season at the Scottish Open qualifiers on Monday.

The Captain overturned 3-2 and 4-3 deficits to prevail a narrow 5-4 winner when the pair clashed in the European Masters last 16 in August.

Carter’s start to the season has been one of mixed fortunes. The two-time Crucible finalist went on to reach the last four in Furth, where he was edged out 6-5 by eventual champion Kyren Wilson.

However, he has also suffered qualifying-round defeats at the British Open and Northern Ireland Open, succumbing to Hammad Miah and Ding Junhui respectively.

And the four-time ranking event winner is aiming to avoid falling at the opening hurdle of this tournament for a second successive year, having lost 4-3 to Ken Doherty 12 months ago.

Carter has won three of his four previous meetings with Grace, whose sole triumph came courtesy of a 5-3 victory in the last 48 of the 2015 Shanghai Masters.

The two-time ranking event semi-finalist has failed to progress beyond the last 16 of any tournament since reaching the last four at the Northern Ireland Open in November 2020.

A run to the fourth round in 2017 represents Grace’s best performance at the Scottish Open.

But like Carter, the world number 49 is aiming to avoid defeat in the qualifying round for the second straight edition, after losing 4-2 to Fergal O’Brien last year.

The winner of this match will play either Robbie Williams or Liam Graham in the main stages of the Scottish Open next month.

Play gets underway at 7pm BST on Monday and will be contested over the best of seven frames at Chase Leisure Centre in Cannock.
