Mark Allen and John Higgins go head to head in a mouth-watering first-round clash at the Tour Championship on Monday.

The standout tie in the opening round at Manchester Central sees two familiar foes collide for the fifth time already this season.

Though Allen won the first two encounters at the Champion of Champions and Masters, Higgins has since enjoyed a pair of 5-2 victories at the German Masters and Welsh Open.

Both players know what it takes to reach the final of this elite event. While the Pistol was runner-up to Stephen Maguire in 2020, the Wizard suffered an agonising 10-9 defeat from 9-4 up against Neil Robertson two years ago.

For the second year running, Allen arrives at the Tour Championship with three titles already under his belt this season. Along with his triumph at the Champion of Champions, he has also been victorious at the Shoot Out and Players Championship.

The world number three is now looking to complete the Players Series set, having won the World Grand Prix last term.

As for Higgins, he will be desperate to end his three-year wait for ranking silverware, with his most recent triumph coming at the 2021 Players Championship.

Having failed to qualify for last year’s event, Higgins was the last player to secure his place in the tournament this time around.

Although, he has demonstrated signs of his best form throughout the campaign, in which he has reached six semi-finals – including the Champion of Champions, Scottish Open and Welsh Open.

The match will be contested over the best of 19 frames at Manchester Central and the winner will play Ding Junhui in the Tour Championship quarter-finals.

Play gets under way at 1pm BST on Monday with the opening eight frames, before playing to a conclusion from 7pm.
