Judd Trump goes head-to-head with Neil Robertson in a mouth-watering first round clash at the UK Championship on Tuesday.

Arguably the most eye-catching tie of the opening round pits two of the game’s most successful left-handers – and two former champions – against each other at the York Barbican Centre.

Between them, they have won four UK titles, while appearing in a combined six finals.

That includes their epic showdown in the 2020 showpiece, with Robertson prevailing on the final pink to claim his third crown.

The Australian was also a 6-4 winner when they met at the Champion of Champions earlier this month, though those are his only victories in the last eight meetings between the players.

Champion in 2011, Trump begins the latest quest to double his UK tally, having also lost out to Ronnie O’Sullivan 10-9 in the 2014 final.

The Ace reached the semi-finals last year, though he has failed to progress beyond the last 16 in 15 of his 19 previous appearances.

Nevertheless, Trump has momentum having already landed two pieces of silverware this season at the Shanghai Masters and inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters.

Robertson also returned to the winners’ circle this term after a near two-and-a-half-year absence, following his triumph at the English Open in September.

The Thunder was, nevertheless, consigned to the qualifying rounds of this event, but battled from 5-4 down to beat Oliver Lines before seeing off 2003 champion Matthew Stevens 6-2.

Robertson also lifted this trophy in 2013 and 2015, though his two most recent successes represent his only runs past the round of 16 in the past decade.

A showdown with either three-time champion John Higgins or He Guoqiang awaits whoever prevails from what promises to be another nail-biting encounter between these two decorated left-handers.

The match gets under way at 1pm GMT on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the York Barbican Centre.
