The Crucible King returns to action

Stephen Hendry marks his return to the UK Championship with a show-down against Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in Round One on Wednesday.

Only Steve Davis and Ronnie O’Sullivan have won more UK Championship titles than Hendry, and the five-time winner marks his return to the York Barbican for the first time in a decade with a clash against Thai star Un-Nooh.

Hendry, who came out of retirement last year, has endured a mixed bag of results so far and is yet to progress beyond the Second Round of a ranking event since rejoining the tour.

His best result of the campaign so far came against Michael White in September’s English Open qualifiers, when the Scot ran out a 4-1 winner.

The 52-year-old, who has featured in a joint-record ten UK Championship finals, lost out to Stephen Maguire in his last appearance in the event in 2011 and now faces a formidable opener against the quick-fire 36-year-old.

Un-Nooh is a former Shoot-Out champion and is making his ninth consecutive appearance in this event, having famously missed the final black for a maximum break in 2015.

Six Reds World Champion in 2015, Un-Nooh was also runner-up in the 2019 World Open and reached the Semi-Finals of a further four ranking events.

He has made three competitive maximum breaks, eight fewer than Hendry, most recently in the German Masters qualifiers in October.

The match gets under way from 7.30pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 frames.

Either Zhao Xintong or Yuan Sijun will await the winner in the Second Round.
