Ronnie O’Sullivan resumes his quest for a fifth Welsh Open title with a Quarter-Final tie against Tian Pengfei in Llandudno on Friday.

O’Sullivan is bidding to become the joint most successful player in Welsh Open history by equalling John Higgins’ tally of five titles.

The Rocket, whose most recent Welsh Open triumph came in 2016, looks to progress to the Semi-Final stage for the third time in his last four appearances.

The reigning and seven-time World Champion has been blighted by issues with the tip of his cue this week but has still managed to pull off back-to-back whitewash wins.

He opened up with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Scotland’s Ross Muir, having seen the tip fall off his cue twice and lose a frame on the ‘three miss’ rule, before thrashing Rod Lawler and Ben Mertens 4-0 to coast into the Last Eight.

Tian, meanwhile, finds himself at the Quarter-Final stage of this tournament for the first time, equalling his best ever run in a ranking event since first turning professional in 2006.

The 35-year-old overcame the legendary Jimmy White 4-2 in his opener, before seeing off recent German Masters champion Ali Carter 4-2 and five-time champion John Higgins 4-1 late on Thursday evening.

The Chinese ace is now looking to pull off what would be one of the biggest wins of his career as he aims to break new ground.

Tian has, however, defeated O’Sullivan on two previous occasions (2010 and 2014), but ‘The Rocket’ has since won their last three meetings, including two whitewashes.

The match gets under way from around 3pm GMT and will be contested over the best of nine frames.

Either reigning UK Champion Mark Allen or former Gibraltar Open winner Robert Milkins will await the winner in Saturday’s Semi-Finals.
