Mark Selby goes head to head with Luca Brecel in a mouth-watering first Welsh Open semi-final in Llandudno on Saturday.

Two former World champions collide at Venue Cymru, with Ali Carter or Stephen Maguire awaiting the winner in Sunday’s showpiece.

This is the players’ first meeting since their epic 2023 World Championship final, which Brecel won 18-15 despite Selby becoming the first player to hit a 147 during a Crucible showpiece.

The Belgian’s triumph ended a run of six straight defeats against the Jester, including a 9-6 reverse in the 2022 Scottish Open final.

Selby is appearing in his 65th ranking semi-final, and fourth at the Welsh Open, which he won in 2008.

It is also the four-time World champion’s seventh semi-final appearance in the Home Nations Series, where victory this weekend would see him land a fifth such title and move within one of Judd Trump’s record tally (six).

Though under the weather at the start of the week, Selby opened with a break of 141 in his 4-2 win over Haydon Pinhey, before edging out last year’s semi-finalist Elliot Slessor 4-3.

The Jester then whitewashed home favourite Jamie Jones 4-0, before scraping past fellow four-time Crucible king John Higgins 5-4 in a marathon quarter-final.

Through to his first Welsh Open semi-final since 2012, the world number four is the favourite to go all the way and lift the Ray Reardon trophy this weekend.

However, Brecel will certainly not lie down in his first ranking semi-final of the campaign – and 12th in his career.

The Bullet opened with a pair of 4-2 wins over Stuart Carrington and Noppon Saengkham, while also seeing off Pang Junxu 4-1 and home favourite Jackson Page 5-2.

Brecel was a 4-3 winner in his only previous Welsh Open clash with Selby back in 2015, while he boasts a decent strike rate in ranking semi-finals, having prevailed from seven of the 11 he has contested.

The match breaks off at 1pm GMT on Saturday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at Venue Cymru in Llandudno.
