Jimmy White looks to continue his recent resurgence against Tian Pengfei in the last 64 of the Welsh Open at Venue Cymru on Wednesday.

The Whirlwind has turned back the clock this season with the 60-year-old winning 10 of the 18 matches he has played to climb to 81st in the world rankings.

Four of those came at the UK Championship, where White came through as many qualifying rounds to reach the final stages before eventually succumbing to Ryan Day in the last 32.

He also won two qualifiers on the way to reaching the German Masters last 16 earlier this month, with an in-form Jack Lisowski denying him a first ranking quarter-final appearance in five-and-a-half years.

The three-time World Seniors champion is now looking to reach the Last 32 of a Home Nations event for the third time – and first since doing so at the 2017 Northern Ireland Open.

A semi-finalist in 2000, it would also be his first appearance in the Last 32 of this tournament since 2009.

Like White, Tian advanced to the last 16 in Berlin – matching his best performance of the season, having reached the same stage of the Northern Ireland Open.

The world number 49’s run in Belfast represented his first venture beyond the Third Round of any Home Nations event since reaching the 2019 English Open Quarter-Finals.

Tian is now looking to reach the last 32 of the Welsh Open for the third time, though his record in the event has been disappointing in recent times.

Indeed the Chinese cueist, who beat Michael Holt in the opening round on Monday, had suffered first-round exits in four of the last five editions of the tournament prior to this week.

Recent German Masters champion Ali Carter will await the winner in the Third Round on Thursday.

Play gets underway at around 3pm GMT on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of seven frames at Venue Cymru in Llandudno.
