Robertson begins his title defence on Wednesday (Credit: Every Second Media/Alamy Live News)

Neil Robertson launches his World Grand Prix title defence on Wednesday, with Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump also in action in Hong Kong.

The first round continues in Kowloon City, where five former champions are aiming to avoid early exits at the Kai Tak Arena.

Robertson looks to make a winning start to the defence of the trophy he won in emphatic fashion last season, whitewashing Stuart Bingham 10-0 in the final.

The Thunder added to his 2020 triumph to become the third multiple winner of the event, after three-time champions O’Sullivan and Trump.

Robertson is the top seed this year, aided by the bumper top prize of £500,000 he pocketed for winning the lucrative Saudi Arabia Masters in August.

First up for the Australian is former Crucible finalist Jak Jones, while O’Sullivan goes up against Joe O’Connor.

Trump, now a resident of Hong Kong, is effectively playing in his home event. The recently crowned German Masters winner aims to build on his momentum against Yuan Sijun.

The tie of the round sees John Higgins lock horns with reigning World champion Zhao Xintong in what is a repeat of last month’s epic Masters quarter-final, which the Scotsman won 6-5 on the black.

Shaun Murphy and Mark Allen are the other two former champions in action on day two. Murphy, who triumphed in 2016, plays Pang Junxu, with 2023 winner Allen taking on 2019 finalist Ali Carter.

Two-time Scottish Open winner Gary Wilson faces Si Jiahui, while current Scottish Open champion Chris Wakelin goes up against Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.

Play gets under way at 5am GMT (1pm local time) on Wednesday with all matches contested over the best of nine frames in Kowloon City, Hong Kong.
