Judd Trump begins his latest quest for a second World Snooker Championship title with a tricky first-round clash against Gary Wilson.
The world number one faces one of the toughest draws in round one, with his opponent a former Crucible semi-finalist who only dropped out of the world’s top 16 earlier this season.
It is not the first time the players have met in Sheffield. They also locked horns in the 2019 semi-finals, with Trump winning 17-11 on his way to lifting the trophy.
The Ace has also been a beaten finalist on two occasions at the Crucible, where he is appearing for a 16th successive year.
A semi-finalist last year, Trump arrives off the back of reaching five finals this season, ending his silverware drought with a record-extending fourth triumph at the German Masters in February.
Though far from his best, the world number one was also a finalist at the Tour Championship last time out, which will give him confidence in his quest to double up in Sheffield.
Trump has only ever suffered three first-round defeats at the Crucible, where Wilson is returning after missing out 12 months ago.
The Tyneside Terror secured his place in the main draw in dramatic fashion. He was taken to a decider from 7-2 up against Xu Si in the final qualifying round, but held his nerve with a timely break of 126 to scrape over the line.
Aside from his run to the 2019 semi-finals, Wilson has only recorded one match win in his other four previous Crucible appearances.
Nevertheless, the three-time ranking event winner – and finalist at this season’s Wuhan Open – will not be daunted by the prospect of facing Trump on the biggest stage.
It promises to be an intriguing battle over the best of 19 frames, with Si Jiahui or Hossein Vafaei awaiting the winner in round two.
The match breaks off at 10am BST on Tuesday with the opening nine frames, before playing to a finish at 7pm later that day.
