Ronnie O’Sullivan continues his bid for a record eighth World Championship title with a quarter-final showdown against Si Jiahui at The Crucible.

A clash of the generations sees 49-year-old O’Sullivan face an opponent 27 years his junior as they vie to reach the hallowed one-table setup in Sheffield.

After pulling out of several ranking events this season, as well as The Masters, speculation mounted over O’Sullivan’s involvement in the sport’s showpiece, but he has maintained his ever-present record at The Crucible.

Having made his debut here as a 17-year-old back in 1993, ‘The Rocket’ made the fastest professional maximum on record in 1997 and went on to claim his first world title four years later before adding a further six to equal Stephen Hendry’s tally.

However, personal turmoil has curtailed much of O’Sullivan’s 2024/25 season, with his last ranking event appearance coming in November when he lost out to Barry Hawkins in Round One of the UK Championship, before snapping his cue in frustration at the Championship League in January and pulling out of the tournament.

The 41-time ranking event winner had been practicing at his purpose-built facility in Riyadh in preparation for his highly-anticipated return, where he hopes to replicate his infamous 2013 triumph when he went on to win the world title after almost full season out of action.

The Essex icon dismissed any fears over potential rustiness as he brushed aside rival Ali Carter 10-4 in the opening round, reeling off five consecutive frames in a clinical second session, and he continued in that same ruthless vein to thrash 25-year-old Pang Junxu 13-4 in the second round.

O’Sullivan is now remarkably featuring in his 23rd Crucible quarter-final and is vying for a place in his 14th semi-final.

Si, meanwhile, finds himself through to the Last Eight for the second time in three years and has his sights set on what would be the biggest win of his career to date.

Semi-finalist here on debut in 2023, the Chinese youngster opened up with a 10-6 win over David Gilbert, before battling past Ben Woollaston 13-10 in the Last 16.

Twice a ranking event finalist, Si is one of two Chinese representatives left standing in the competition and is no stranger to defeating O’Sullivan in a ranking tournament, having done so at this season’s Saudi Arabia Masters.

The match gets under way from 2.30pm BST on Tuesday for a maximum of eight frames, before resuming from 10am on Wednesday and being played to a finish over the best of 25 from 7pm that evening.

Either world number 20 Chris Wakelin or former UK Champion Zhao Xintong will await the winner in the semi-finals.
