Judd Trump is aiming to reach his fifth successive Crucible quarter-final when he takes on Anthony McGill in the second round.
The 2019 World champion is eyeing a second title in Sheffield, but faces a man who generally saves his best form for snooker’s biggest stage.
Trump was far from vintage during his first-round clash with debutant Hossein Vafaei, but still prevailed a relatively comfortable 10-4 winner.
After a magnificent break of 103 in frame three, the Ace managed just three contributions over 50 thereon.
Nevertheless, it proved more than enough for the world number three to advance to the last 16 for the 11th time in 13 appearances at the Crucible.
Standing in his way of a fifth quarter-final on the spin is McGill, who is eyeing his third straight venture into the last eight.
The Glasgow Gladiator suffered an agonising 17-16 defeat to Kyren Wilson in the 2020 semi-finals, before narrowly losing out 13-12 to Stuart Bingham in last year’s quarters.
Although McGill arrived off the back of a generally modest campaign that yielded just one ranking semi-final appearance at the Scottish Open, he often produces his best in Sheffield.
Aside from his deep runs, he defeated Ronnie O’Sullivan last year as well as dethroning reigning champion Mark Selby on his debut in 2015.
The world number 13 will be eyeing another notable scalp here, as he looks to build on his 10-7 victory over Liam Highfield in the opening round.
And this will be the first-ever meeting between the players over a longer distance, having only previously faced off over a maximum of seven frames.
The winner will play either Kyren Wilson or Stuart Bingham in the quarter-finals at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Play gets underway at 2.30pm BST on Saturday with the opening eight frames, with another eight following at the same time the following day before drawing to a conclusion at 7pm on Monday.
