Mark Williams aims to teach his young protégé Jackson Page a lesson on the baize when the Welsh duo collide in the Last 16 of the 2022 World Snooker Championship.

Williams produced one of the stand-out performances of the First Round to thrash Michael White 10-3 with the aid of four centuries.

The number eight seed, who made his Crucible debut 25 years ago, is now vying to reach the Quarter-Finals for the third year in a row and the fifth time in his last six appearances.

Williams began the season by winning the British Open last August for his 24th career ranking title, and was beaten in the final of the Shoot Out earlier this year.

Semi-finalist at The Masters, the world number eight warmed up for this event by making two maximum breaks in one night in an exhibition and was involved in one of the matches of the season against Ronnie O’Sullivan at the recent Tour Championship – losing out 10-9 in the Quarter-Finals.

Page, the lowest ranked player in the event, enjoyed a dream debut by knocking out 2013 world finalist Barry Hawkins 10-7 to set up a meeting with his regular practice and travel partner.

The world number 90 came through four qualifying rounds to earn his place at The Crucible, defeating reigning Welsh Open champion Joe Perry along the way.

Their close friendship will be put to one side over the next few days as the youngster aims to register his first competitive win over his mentor and continue his fairy-tale run.

The only previous meeting between the pair saw Williams prevail 4-1 in the Last 32 of the 2020 Scottish Open.

Their latest encounter gets under way from 1pm BST on Thursday April 21 for a maximum of eight frames, resuming from 10am on Friday before being played to a finish from 7pm that evening.

Either defending champion Mark Selby or 16th seed Yan Bingtao will await the winner in the Quarter-Finals.
