Kyren Wilson will hope to make it third time lucky when he faces John Higgins in the Second Round of the World Snooker Championship.

Two genuine title contenders go head to head in one of the most eye-catching ties of the second round at The Crucible.

It will be their third meeting in Sheffield with Higgins prevailing on both previous occasions. The Scotsman was a commanding 13-6 winner in the 2017 quarter-finals, before coming through 17-13 in the following year’s semi-finals.

Four-time champion Higgins is now targeting his 17th appearance in the last eight – and sixth in eight years – following a generally modest season by his standards, in which a run to the WST Classic quarter-finals represents his best performance at a ranking tournament.

Nevertheless, his first-round form suggests he will be confident of upsetting the form book, the 10th seed hitting two centuries and a further six breaks over 50 during his commanding 10-3 win over David Grace.

Meanwhile, Wilson has been one of the form players of the campaign; the European Masters champion also reaching the Tour Championship final last time out.

Despite off-table concerns, the Warrior built on that momentum with a magical maximum break during his first-round victory over Ryan Day. That marked one of five centuries during his 10-5 success.

Wilson is certainly well-equipped to go all the way in Sheffield. Runner-up to Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2020 and a two-time semi-finalist, his exit at this stage of last year’s event ended a run of six successive quarter-final appearances.

The winner of this epic battle over 25 frames will play either Mark Selby or Gary Wilson in the World Championship quarter-finals at the Crucible Theatre.

Play gets underway at 10am BST on Sunday with the opening eight frames, with another eight from 7pm, before playing to a conclusion with a maximum of nine at 1pm on Monday.
