Kyren Wilson and Jak Jones bid for a place in the history books as they battle to be crowned World Snooker Champion at The Crucible for the first time.

A date with destiny beckons at the sport’s spiritual home in Sheffield as the two in-form hopefuls vie to join the all-time greats by lifting the sport’s ultimate prize.

They have emerged unscathed through the 32-player field following a tournament of upsets and intrigue and now stand on the cusp of a career-defining triumph over the next two days.

For Wilson, it is his second bite at the apple in a World Championship final as he aims to go one better than his runner-up spot here in 2020.

Five-time ranking event winner Wilson has put to bed a below-par season by his standards, producing his clinical best on the biggest stage of all.

The world number 12, who made a maximum break at The Crucible last year, thrashed the returning Dominic Dale 10-1 before comfortably seeing off debutant Joe O’Connor 13-6 in the Last 16.

He then produced a clinical final session to clinch a 13-8 victory over John Higgins and avenge his three previous defeats to the Scot in the sport’s showpiece event.

Wilson sealed his spot in the final after pulling clear from 8-8 with David Gilbert by reeling off nine of the last 12 frames to clinch a commanding 17-11 success on Saturday.

Jones, meanwhile, has enjoyed a remarkable run to a first world final in what is only his second appearance in the event.

Quarter-finalist on debut 12 months ago, the unassuming Welshman has also put a below-par season behind him by recapturing his top form at The Crucible, defying the odds to knock out a host of star names en route.

Having won two matches to secure his place in the main draw, Jones is bidding to become only the third qualifier in history to win the world title, following in the footsteps of Terry Griffiths (1979) and Shaun Murphy (2005).

The 30-year-old overcame Jamie Clarke and Zhou Yuelong in the qualifying rounds, before opening up with a commanding 10-4 win over International Champion Zhang Anda.

He then defeated last year’s semi-finalist Si Jiahui 13-9 before dumping out 2019 World Champion Judd Trump by the same scoreline in the quarter-finals.

The Silent Assassin then struck down 2015 World Champion Stuart Bingham 17-12 to become only the ninth qualifier in Crucible history to reach the final.

A decade ago, Jones ended the season as world number 128 without a win to his name from 16 matches, now he is guaranteed to finish the campaign in the world’s top 16 and has the opportunity to etch his name into Welsh sporting folk law by emulating his compatriots Terry Griffiths, Ray Reardon and Mark Williams – who have all been crowned World Champion.

This will be the sixth professional meeting between Wilson and Jones, with Wilson having won four of their previous encounters, most recently a 6-0 whitewash at the 2021 UK Championship.

The final gets under way from 1pm BST on Sunday for a maximum of eight frames, resuming at 7pm, before being played to a finish over the best of 35 from 1pm and 7pm on Monday.
