World Snooker Championship 2021 Day One preview and order of play: Curtain is raised at The Crucible

Ronnie O’Sullivan is the defending champion

The world’s top cueists descend on The Crucible for the 2021 World Snooker Championship, and you can follow the latest results and schedule here.

The World Snooker Championship features the top 16 ranked players alongside a further 16 qualifiers as they battle it out for £2.4 million in prize money in a packed schedule from April 17 to May 3.

A host of decorated stars and exciting emerging talents lock horns at the sport’s spiritual home for the 45th consecutive staging in Sheffield.

A limited capacity crowd will be present inside the iconic venue for the opening fortnight, before the potential for a full capacity for the final.

Ronnie O’Sullivan is the reigning champion after he thrashed Kyren Wilson 18-8 in the final last August.

O’Sullivan is bidding to equal Stephen Hendry’s record tally of seven world titles by successfully retaining the title for the second time, having initially done so in 2012/2013.

The Rocket is the number one seed, but has not picked up a ranking title this season and will face formidable competition from a host of the sport’s most in-form stars.

World number one Judd Trump is aiming to secure the title for the second time in three years, having racked up five ranking titles this season.

Other former World Champions vying to get their hands back on this famous trophy include four-time winner John Higgins, three-time champions Mark Selby and Mark Williams, 2010 winner Neil Robertson and 2005 winner Shaun Murphy.

Former finalists in action include Ding Junhui, Barry Hawkins and last year’s runner-up Kyren Wilson, while Mark Joyce and Sam Craigie are the two debutants in this year’s field.

First Round matches are to be contested over the best of 19 frames, with Second Round and Quarter-Final ties best of 25, Semi-Finals best of 33 and the final best of 35.
