Mark Allen locks horns with Wu Yize in a battle between two players both aiming to reach their maiden World Snooker Championship final.

With the first semi-final at the Crucible pitting two former champions in John Higgins and Shaun Murphy, the second sees two players contest arguably the biggest match of their respective careers.

First-time seed Wu had never previously won a match at the iconic venue prior to this year, while two-time semi-finalist Allen is aiming to make it third time lucky at this stage in Sheffield.

The players have shared their two meetings this season; Wu winning 5-1 at last month’s World Open to avenge the 6-3 defeat he suffered against Allen at the Players Championship.

Wu joins an exclusive group of players from mainland China to reach the semi-finals in Sheffield, following in the footsteps of Ding Junhui, Si Jiahui and recently dethroned champion Zhao Xintong.

The 22-year-old claimed his first ever win on this stage when he swept compatriot Lei Peifan aside 10-2 in the opening round.

He then came of age with an impressive 13-11 win over four-time champion Mark Selby, before ending Hossein Vafaei’s ground-breaking run with a 13-9 triumph in the quarter-finals.

Wu is now just two more wins away from following the lead of Joe Johnson (in 1986) and Luca Brecel (in 2023), by lifting the trophy having never previously won a match in Sheffield.

However, he faces a tough semi-final opponent in Allen, who is aiming to avenge his defeats at this stage in 2009 and 2023.

Widely regarded as the best player never to reach a Crucible final, the Pistol will be desperate to shake off that tag with a victory that would also keep him on track to complete a career Triple Crown.

Allen recovered from 5-3 down to beat Zhang Anda in the opening round, before surviving Kyren Wilson’s fightback from 5-0 down to lead 6-5 to eventually run out a commanding 13-9 winner.

The 40-year-old then came through an epic quarter-final with fellow left-hander Barry Hawkins 13-11, during which he compiled his 700th career century.

It promises to be an intriguing second semi-final over the best of 33 frames, for the right to play four-time champion Higgins or 2005 victor Murphy in the showpiece.

The match breaks off at 7pm BST on Thursday with the opening eight frames, continuing with another eight at 2.30pm on Friday and 10am on Saturday, before playing to a conclusion at 7pm later that day.
