Mark Allen will do battle with Gary Wilson on Friday for the second place in this year’s Wuhan Open final.

Two players boasting a combined 14 ranking titles – including two majors and six Home Nations triumphs – go head to head for the right to reach their first final of the calendar year.

Allen has enjoyed an extremely welcome upturn in fortunes this week, having arrived in Wuhan without a ranking quarter-final appearance to his name in 2025.

Tang Hewen, Zak Surety and maximum man Thepchaiya Un-Nooh have been beaten for the loss of just four frames, while he has also prevailed in two deciding frames against Hossein Vafaei and Si Jiahui.

The Pistol trailed 3-1 against the latter, but demonstrated his trademark resolve to take the contest the distance, before a run of 70 got him over the line.

Standing in his way of a place in a 20th ranking final is another player enjoying a resurgence in Wilson.

The Tyneside Terror, who had climbed to a career high of 10th in the WST rankings in April 2024, endured a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, in which a run to the International Championship quarter-finals represented his best performance, while he also failed to qualify for the Crucible.

Nevertheless, Wilson has beaten three former World champions on the way to reaching his first ranking semi-final since the Tour Championship 16 months ago, in Shaun Murphy, Judd Trump and John Higgins.

His victory over Trump was arguably his most impressive, with the two-time Scottish Open champion coming from behind on four occasions, before edging out the world number one in a decider.

Awaiting the winner of this showdown in Saturday’s showpiece will be either Mark Williams or Xiao Guodong.

The match breaks off at 12.30pm BST on Friday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Optics Valley Gymnasium.
