Mark Selby launches his latest quest for Champion of Champions glory when he faces David Gilbert in Bolton on Wednesday.

The reigning World champion headlines what promises to be a tightly contested Group Two at the Bolton Whites Hotel as he continues his record of having appeared at every edition of the popular invitational event.

Yet incredibly, the Jester is still looking to get his hands on the trophy for the first time; his best performances yielding two runs to the semi-finals.

One of those came last year when he was pipped at the post by Neil Robertson in a thrilling encounter.

Selby arrives in Bolton having won nine of his 12 matches this season, but is yet to progress beyond the last 16 of any event.

The world number one has won three of his last four meetings with Gilbert, although the latter prevailed in their most recent showdown at the Northern Ireland Open.

Currently fifth on the one-year list, the Angry Farmer has been one of the form players so far this term.

Having ended his long wait for ranking event success at the Championship League in August, the 40-year-old also reached the quarter-finals of the British Open and Northern Ireland Open.

Elsewhere, 2017 winner Shaun Murphy begins his bid for a second title against Masters champion Yan Bingtao.

Like Selby, the Magician has been a Champion of Champions ever-present since the inaugural event in 2013.

However, his run to glory four years ago marked one of only two occasions that he has progressed beyond his group.

Murphy was famously beaten 4-2 by a 15-year-old Yan in their opening match of the 2015 event.

Currently eighth on the one-year list, the Tiger has established consistency since his first-round exit at the British Open.

Indeed, the 21-year-old reached the Northern Ireland Open semi-finals and English Open quarter-finals, while also qualifying for the final stages of the German Masters and European Masters.

Play gets underway at 1pm GMT on Wednesday with both group semi-finals contested over the best of seven frames at the Bolton Whites Hotel.

The winners will advance to the group final, which begins at 7pm with the best of 11 frames determining who will progress to the semi-finals of the tournament.
