Zhao Xintong and Chang Bingyu go head to head on Saturday in a battle of the home favourites to be crowned the 2026 Wuhan Open champion.
A wonderful week at Optics Valley Gymnasium in Wuhan concludes in a fitting manner, as the new world number one collides with one of China’s top young talents for the top prize of £175,000.
Zhao is aiming to maintain his unblemished record in ranking event finals, having won all previous six, while Chang is seeking his maiden career silverware.
The Cyclone has dropped just seven frames on the way to reaching his seventh ranking showpiece, and he has the chance to build a healthy lead at the summit of the WST rankings with victory here.
After whitewashing compatriot Gao Yang in the opening round, Zhao posted a pair of 5-2 victories over Jak Jones and fellow left-hander Barry Hawkins.
He put another to the sword in fellow world number one contender Neil Robertson, courtesy of a 5-1 rout in the quarter-finals. The world number one-elect then ended two-time defending champion Xiao Guodong’s 18-match winning streak in Wuhan with a 6-2 victory in their semi-final showdown.
Chang, meanwhile, is fresh from defeating the former world number one and a seven-time World champion on the way to his second ranking final appearance.
Whatever happens, the 24-year-old is guaranteed his biggest career pay day of at least £75,000. He will be hoping to give a better account of himself in a ranking final this time around, having suffered a resounding 9-2 defeat against Chris Wakelin in last season’s Scottish Open showpiece.
Chang’s form this week suggests he will. After opening with a 5-1 win over compatriot Liu Hongyu, he beat 2023 finalist Ali Carter, before thrashing Judd Trump 5-1 – ensuring the Ace’s lengthy run as world number one came to an end.
Not satisfied, though, the left-hander then took advantage against an out-of-sorts Ronnie O’Sullivan, who was ousted 6-3 in the semi-finals.
We are set for a mouth-watering final over the best of 19 frames at Optics Valley Gymnasium between two of this season’s leading breakbuilders, who have already compiled a combined 36 centuries thus far.
The match breaks off at 7am BST (2pm local time) on Saturday with the opening nine frames, before playing to a finish from 12.30pm (7.30pm local time) with a maximum of ten.
