Former Masters champions Mark Williams and Mark Allen collide in a mouth-watering first round fixture at Alexandra Palace on Monday.

The two decorated left-handers go head-to-head in the sport’s most prestigious invitational event for the first time as they vie to restore their former glories at Ally Pally.

Allen claimed this title in 2018, becoming the first Northern Irishman to do so since Dennis Taylor in 1987, and the Antrim ace has been an ever-present in The Masters since 2009.

The current world number ten has reached back-to-back Masters semi-finals and has enjoyed a fine season so far, picking up his 12th ranking title at the English Open last September.

Allen has also reached the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open, Northern Ireland Open and Scottish Open, though he suffered a disappointing first round exit at the UK Championship and received strong criticism for his methodical approach to the contest.

Williams made his Masters debut back in 1995, lifting the title three years later with an epic 10-9 victory over Stephen Hendry, before repeating the feat at the Wembley Conference Centre in 2003.

The Welshman most recently finished runner-up to Judd Trump at Ally Pally three years ago but has suffered successive first round exits since.

Williams has also added to his ranking title tally this season, triumphing at the Xi’an Grand Prix and remains firmly among the sport’s elite as world number four at the age of 50.

However, it is Allen who holds the upper-hand in terms of the overall head-to-heads, with 13 wins to Williams’ six stretching back to 2007.

The match gets under way from 1pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 frames, with either two-time Masters champion Judd Trump or 2011 champion Ding Junhui awaiting the winner in the quarter-finals later in the week.
