Williams and Ding collide on Monday (Zhai Zheng/Xinhua/Alamy Live News)

Mark Williams goes head to head with Ding Junhui in a battle of the former Masters champions in the opening round on Monday.

The first match on day two at Alexandra Palace pits two players who have triumphed on a combined three occasions at snooker’s most prestigious invitational event.

Williams won the title in 1998 and 2003, while Ding lifted the trophy in 2011.

However, both players fell at the opening hurdle 12 months ago, and will be desperate to avoid a repeat performance this time around.

Williams, who was beaten 6-4 by eventual finalist Ali Carter at this stage last year, is set for his 27th appearance at the Masters, where he was also runner-up to Judd Trump two years ago.

The Welshman has already landed invitational silverware this season at the Champion of Champions, while he was also a beaten finalist at the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters.

Ding is also in this season’s winner’s circle, having triumphed at the International Championship, as he gears up for his 19th Masters appearance.

However, he has suffered first-round exits in each of his last three, including a defeat by Ronnie O’Sullivan 12 months ago.

Although, Ding still made his mark with a superb maximum break, becoming the first player to compile two at the Masters.

The pair have only met once before in this event. Ding was a 6-4 winner at this stage in 2011 – the year he lifted the trophy – and he will hope that serves as a positive omen 14 years on.

A showdown with either two-time champion Judd Trump or two-time runner-up Barry Hawkins awaits the winner of this clash in the quarter-finals.

The match breaks off at 1pm GMT on Monday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at Alexandra Palace.
