Judd Trump launches his Shanghai Masters title defence with a mouth-watering clash against Neil Robertson on Tuesday.
The world number one added his name to the roll of honour at the popular invitational event 12 months ago, beating Mark Williams, Si Jiahui, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Shaun Murphy for the loss of just 12 frames.
It was the first of three titles Trump claimed last season, along with the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters and UK Championship.
The Ace – also a beaten Shanghai Masters finalist in 2012, 2015 and 2017 – will be eager to add to his silverware collection this term, which starts here after he opted to skip the Championship League at the start of the campaign.
Robertson was also a multiple winner during a resurgent 2024-25, in which he secured his return to the world’s top 16 with victories at the English Open and World Grand Prix.
Ironically, the latter came during the WST’s most recent visit to China in March, and he picked up from where he left off against Pang Junxu in the first round.
Indeed, Robertson opened with back-to-back centuries of 137 and 102, while further contributions of 80 and 68 helped seal a commanding 6-2 win.
Trump had enjoyed four straight victories since the Australian edged their 2020 UK Championship final clash on the pink, though the four most recent encounters between the pair have been shared.
Whoever prevails from this enticing showdown can look forward to another against four-time World champion Mark Selby in the quarter-finals.
The match gets under way at 12.30pm BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at Luhan Gymnasium in Shanghai.
