Reigning champion Ronnie O’Sullivan and home hero Ding Junhui face off in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Shanghai Masters on Thursday.

The two most decorated players in the history of the Shanghai Masters collide at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium as they vie to maintain their clinical records.

Five-time champion O’Sullivan first triumphed here in 2009 and has won the last four stagings of the event – 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2023.

The Rocket stretched his unbeaten run to a landmark 20 matches at the Shanghai Masters since 2016 by thrashing 16-year-old Zhou Jinhao 6-1 on Tuesday with breaks of 85, 78, 85, 79 and 60 in the process.

O’Sullivan, 48, claimed the UK Championship and World Grand Prix titles last season to take his overall tally of ranking titles to 41 and also scooped an eighth Masters crown, as well as the inaugural World Masters of Snooker title in Saudi Arabia.

The Essex legend defeated Ding en route to glory at the UK Championship, Masters and World Grand Prix and will look to continue in that vein in an event he has made his own down the years.

Ding is the only other player to have claimed his title on more than one occasion (2013 and 2016) and got his campaign under way by deny Ali Carter in an epic last-frame decider.

Having led 4-1, he was pegged back to five apiece, but kept his cool with a timely break of 95 to seal the deal.

Ding last faced O’Sullivan in this event back in 2009 – the year The Rocket clinched the title for the first time – and that remarkably remains their most recent meeting in China.

Ding was runner-up in last season’s UK Championship and World Open, extending his wait for another ranking title to four years.

The match gets under way from 12.30pm BST (7.30pm local time) and will be contested over the best of 11 frames.

Either former World Champion Judd Trump or former Crucible semi-finalist Si Jiahui will await the winner in Saturday’s second semi-final.
