Neil Robertson aims to avoid consecutive defeats against Fan Zhengyi when the pair face off in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals.

The Chinese prevailed in a deciding frame when the pair last met at last year’s Champion of Champions, in which he went on to reach the semi-finals.

Fan is now set for only his second appearance in the last eight of any event since his fairy-tale triumph at the European Masters 18 months ago.

Nevertheless, the 22-year-old will be confident of going further and beating Robertson once again.

After all, he is fresh from reeling off four successive frames to beat world number three Mark Allen 6-3, making breaks of 91, 88, 84, 73 along the way.

Fan was also in impressive scoring form against reigning Scottish Open champion Gary Wilson in the opening round, runs of 96, 90, 71 and 65 helping him to a 6-2 success.

Meanwhile, Robertson looked like he might be heading for an early exit against Ding Junhui, who won four straight frames from 3-1 down to move one from victory.

But the Thunder, who had made a break of 102 earlier on, dug deep from the brink of defeat with runs of 72, 71 and 65 completing a marvellous turnaround.

Robertson will now look to build on that momentum as he targets a more successful 2023-24 season, having not landed any silverware last term and while notably failing to qualify for the lucrative Players Championship or Tour Championship.

The winner of this match will play either Luca Brecel or Robert Milkins in the Shanghai Masters semi-finals.

Play gets under way at 12.30pm BST on Thursday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at Shanghai Grand Stage.
