White is eyeing a fifth World Seniors title (Sportimage Ltd/Alamy Live News)

Jimmy White launches his quest for a record-extending fifth World Seniors Championship title against the returning Alfie Burden on Thursday.

Day two at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield commences with a battle of the left-handed Londoners – and a repeat of the 2023 final.

The Whirlwind was a 5-3 winner in that showpiece two years ago, hitting breaks of 62, 63 and 55, before sealing his fourth title with a run of 84.

White was appearing in his fifth successive final, though that streak ended 12 months ago when he was whitewashed 3-0 in the quarter-finals by eventual champion Igor Figueiredo.

The 63-year-old is also seeking momentum following a generally low-key season on the professional tour, during which a run to the Northern Ireland Open last 32 represented his best performance.

Dropping to 93rd in the WST rankings, White was subsequently handed a customary Invitational Tour Card for the next two seasons.

Meanwhile, Burden was relegated from the professional tour for a third time, having failed to progress beyond the last 64 of any event during the campaign.

The 48-year-old was the last player to qualify for this event. After missing out on an automatic place at The Crucible by just a single frame in the concluding qualification event, he edged out Matthew Ford 4-3 in the final of the Golden Ticket Play-Off in Reading.

Burden will now look to draw on the positive memories of his World Seniors Championship debut at the iconic venue two years ago. Indeed, he defeated Ken Doherty, Stephen Hendry and Ben Hancorn for the loss of just two frames, before eventually coming up short against White.

The four-time ranking event quarter-finalist will be eager to avenge that defeat, and kickstart his quest to go one better this year.

A showdown with either Tony Drago or Gerard Greene awaits the winner of this contest in the World Seniors Snooker Championship quarter-finals.

The match breaks off at 12pm BST and will be contested over the best of seven frames at The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
