Stephen Hendry aims to roll back the years when he takes on Gary Wilson in the Second Round of the 2021 British Open in Leicester on Thursday.
Hendry secured his first win of the 2021/22 season on Tuesday as he edged out Chris Wakelin 3-2 at the Morningside Arena.
The seven-time World Champion made a shock return to the professional circuit last year, coming out of retirement after an eight-year absence.
The 52-year-old made just two tournament appearances last season, losing 4-1 to Matthew Selt in Round One of the Gibraltar Open before defeating rival Jimmy White 6-3 in the World Championship qualifiers.
His quest for an immediate Crucible return was eventually ended by China’s Xu Si – who ran out a 6-1 winner in the Second Qualifying Round.
Thought his win over Wakelin was a somewhat scrappy one with a high break of just 47, Hendry is likely to be high on confidence and knows he will have the lion’s share of crowd support as he bids to reach the latter stages.
His next test comes against 2019 World Championship semi-finalist Wilson, a renowned break-builder who has made three maximums in professional competition.
The former China Open finalist endured a nightmare season behind closed doors in 2020/21, suffering no fewer than seven First Round exits in ranking events.
The Wallsend cueist will be hoping for a change in fortunes as the sport approaches a return to normality, and will be encouraged by his strong start to the tournament, having swept aside Fergal O’Brien 3-0 in the opening round.
The match gets under way from around 2pm BST and will be contested over the best of five frames.
