Jak Jones claimed the biggest title of his career at the British Open on Sunday, after beating Mark Selby 10-6 in the final.

The former Crucible finalist had led and been pegged back by the four-time World champion on five separate occasions at The Centaur in Cheltenham, but took five of the last six frames to capture the Clive Everton trophy and top prize of Β£100,000.

Jones, who won his maiden ranking silverware at the Championship League in July, made it two tournament victories in the space of just 53 days.

That was the despite the Welshman, who also defeated Judd Trump in the semi-finals, feeling he did not produce his optimum performance levels in the showpiece.

“I can’t believe it, to be honest,” he told 5. “The fight dragged [Mark] down a little bit. I never thought I’d be able to grind Mark Selby down, but I did it today.

“I felt really bad all day. I just tried to battle. I didn’t really feel comfortable until the end, which is strange. I’m usually at home watching [Mark] play all the finals, so to play him is amazing.

“It’s been difficult for the last 15 years, I’ve been battling away. I haven’t really achieved a lot in the game. To start winning things this season, it feels amazing.”

This was Jones’ third ranking final – 37 less than his opponent – and he took a 41-minute opening frame after a run of 64 proved to be enough, though Selby responded with a magnificent 139 total clearance.

After the next four frames were also shared, the Jester looked like he would lead for the first time after he was in first with 60 in the seventh.

Yet Jones, who is due to become a father for the second time in the coming days, produced a superb 64 counter clearance to snatch it.

Nevertheless, 2024 champion Selby – appearing in his third British Open final in four years – replied with 70 to level things up again heading into the evening at 4-4.

China Open winner Selby, who had prevailed in 14 of his 15 previous matches at ranking events, responded to losing the opening frame of the second session with a break of exactly 100 for 5-5.

However, after Jones regained his lead with 65, the Jester lost a tight 12th frame on the black despite a run of 66, as his opponent pulled two clear for the first time.

The Welshman was unfortunate to go in-off after potting the penultimate red in frame 13, allowing Selby to halve his deficit at 7-6.

Although, Jones took control thereon, with contributions of 53 and 62 in the next two frames moving him to the brink of victory.

Selby replied to his opponent’s 48 in the 16th with 47, though fatigue was evident in the four-time Crucible king, who entered this tournament immediately after his run to the Wuhan Open quarter-finals.

After the Jester rattled the green in the jaws of the right corner, Jones grasped his opportunity by clearing to the pink – playing a superb positional shot from brown to blue along the way – to seal the deal.

“I thought Jack played great today, from start to finish,” Selby said. “Every time he got a chance, he looked like he was going to score. His safety was great, his long game was good. I’ve got no complaints, the better player won on the day.

“It was only a matter of time, for me, before he won [a big tournament].

“I’ve had a great start to the season. I’m just happy I’ve got a day off tomorrow because I’m absolutely ****ed! I’ve got nothing left, I’m literally running on empty. I gave it everything I had, but I just wasn’t good enough.”
