Judd Trump collides with Jak Jones in a British Open semi-final battle between two of this season’s tournament winners on Saturday.
Both players have already landed silverware during the embryonic stages of this campaign, and are now just two more wins away from doubling up.
Jones won the first ranking title of his career at the Championship League in July, while Trump was the last man standing at the Shanghai Masters a couple of weeks later.
The Ace has dominated the head-to-head with seven victories from their nine meetings, though the Silent Assassin prevailed 13-9 in their most high-profile encounter in the 2024 World Championship quarter-finals.
Trump, who recently vacated his position at the top of the WST rankings, is fresh from a statement victory over new world number one Zhao Xintong in the quarter-finals.
The Bristolian swept the Cyclone aside 5-1 – meaning he has now dropped just a single frame in his last three matches, following back-to-back 4-0 wins over Elliot Slessor and David Gilbert.
Trump has also recorded a pair of 4-2 victories over Dylan Emery and Ricky Walden on the way to reaching his 76th ranking semi-final – and first at the British Open.
It is also uncharted territory in this event for Jones who, like Trump, was a quarter-finalist two years ago.
Unlike his opponent, though, this is only his fourth appearance in the semi-finals of any ranking event.
Jones, despite only belatedly learning of a change to the timing of his scheduled match against Anthony McGill, made two centuries on the way to a 4-0 whitewash of last year’s British Open finalist.
He then swept last week’s Wuhan Open champion Chang Bingyu aside 4-1, and overcame Latvia’s Artemijs Zizins in the round of 16.
Jones was forced to hold his nerve in the quarter-finals against Aaron Hill, who recovered from 4-2 down to level at 4-4, and eventually got over the line with a break of 70 in the decider.
The Cwmbran cueman is due to become a father for the second time next week, and going all the way at this event would certainly enhance those celebrations.
A showdown with either Mark Selby or Liam Highfield awaits the winner of this contest in Sunday’s final.
The match breaks off at 7pm BST on Saturday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at The Centaur in Cheltenham.
