Mark Allen goes head to head with Mark Selby in a mouth-watering second British Open semi-final at The Centaur in Cheltenham on Saturday.

The players ranked third and fifth in the world respectively do battle for the right to play either John Higgins or Oliver Lines in Sunday’s showpiece.

Both have made their mark in different ways this week; Allen produced a superb 147 in his third-round win over Ben Mertens, while Selby has come through four deciding-frame finishes.

That was the Pistol’s fourth maximum and, ironically, his first since he beat the Jester 6-5 in the Masters quarter-finals at the start of the year.

Allen also prevailed in a deciding frame in their other encounter this year at the inaugural Saudi World Masters, while he won 5-3 on the way to reaching the 2022 British Open final, losing out on the title to Ryan Day.

The former UK champion, who has also beaten Gary Wilson and Aaron Hill this week, is fresh from a 5-3 victory over world number one Judd Trump in the last eight, and is now eyeing his 20th ranking final appearance.

For Selby, it would be his 35th – and first since he was runner-up to Mark Williams in this event 12 months ago.

The Jester has been the master of brinkmanship in trademark fashion this week, with Pang Junxu, Yuan Sijun and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh all edged out in deciding frames.

And the four-time World champion followed suit against good friend David Gilbert in the last eight, albeit from 4-1 up. Nevertheless, he held his nerve to prevail once more, and move within two more victories of sealing a return to the tournament winners’ circle.

Play gets under way at 7pm BST on Saturday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at The Centaur in Cheltenham.
