Selby and Robertson do battle
Neil Robertson collides with Mark Selby in a mouth-watering quarter-final battle between the multiple China Open winners on Friday.
Two of the game’s all-time greats, they have won this tournament on a combined five occasions, and both will fancy adding to their respective tallies in Taiyuan this week.
They have previously met in a China Open final, with Robertson prevailing 10-6 to capture the first of his two crowns.
The Thunder, who also won the most recent staging in 2019, shades the overall head-to-head record 25-24, and has an added incentive this week.
Robertson will usurp Judd Trump at the summit of the WST rankings should he complete his China Open hat-trick.
The 2010 World champion withstood Chang Bingyu’s fightback from 5-0 down to prevail 6-3 in the opening round, while breaks of 102, 89 and 79 helped him to a 6-2 victory over Si Jiahui.
Selby, meanwhile, can become the China Open’s most successful player outright this weekend by landing a fourth title, and moving clear of fellow three-time winner Mark Williams.
Having also lost to Trump in the 2011 final, the Jester got over the line in 2015, before claiming back-to-back triumphs in 2017 and 2018.
Despite slipping to ninth in the WST rankings, Selby looks to be in tournament-winning form again in Taiyuan.
After opening with a 6-3 victory over Pang Junxu, the four-time World champion hit a top break of 138 on the way to a 6-1 rout of fellow former Crucible king Kyren Wilson in round two.
Whoever prevails from this encounter will face either another ex-World champion in Stuart Bingham, or former International Championship winner Zhang Anda.
The match breaks off at 12.30pm BST (7.30pm local time) on Friday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Riverside Sports Centre in Taiyuan.
