Ronnie O’Sullivan renews his rivalry with Ali Carter when they lock horns in the Last 32 of the German Masters on Wednesday.

The two Essex cueists go head to head at the Tempodrom in Berlin, with the Rocket aiming to continue his dominant record in the fixture.

Indeed, O’Sullivan has won 25 of the 28 meetings between the players, including both Crucible finals in 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2024 Masters showpiece.

It was in the aftermath of the latter that the pair traded insults (O’Sullivan launching into an X-rated rant), as bad blood resurfaced from six years previously, when they notoriously exchanged shoulder barges during their World Championship showdown.

However, the players appeared to have buried the hatchet when they met in Sheffield last year, with the match played in a much better spirit.

O’Sullivan is back at the Tempodrom for the first time since 2017, the year Carter reached the second of his three German Masters finals.

The Rocket does have distantly fond memories of the venue. It was here that he triumphed in 2012, having trailed 4-0 against Andrew Higginson in the opening round and been on the cusp of falling out of the world’s top 16.

O’Sullivan, who withdrew on the eve of the Masters due to medical reasons, marked his return to action on Tuesday for the first time since losing 6-4 to Zhou Yuelong in the UK Championship first round, making breaks of 96, 63 and 55 during a 5-1 win over Long Zehuang.

The seven-time World champion was a beaten finalist at the Saudi Arabia Masters earlier this season, memorably hitting two 147 breaks during his semi-final win over Chris Wakelin.

He will be targeting another deep run this week, as he looks to build momentum towards a latest bid for a record-breaking eighth Crucible crown.

Carter, meanwhile, has struggled to build on his form earlier in the season, which saw him reach the Shanghai Masters final and the last eight in Riyadh.

Therefore, the Captain will welcome the prospect of his favourite tournament, in which he has triumphed in 2013 and 2023.

The world number 21 beat Ricky Walden 5-2 in qualifying earlier this month, and now seeks a rare win over his rival.

The match gets under way from 7pm GMT and will be contested over the best of nine frames, with either reigning UK Champion Mark Selby or China’s Xu Si awaiting the winner in the Last 16.
