Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Selby renew their rivalry with a quarter-final showdown at the Players Championship in Telford on Thursday.

A clash of the titans at the Telford International Centre sees the two multiple World Champions meet in a ranking event for the first time in four years.

Their most recent encounter came at the beginning of this season, with O’Sullivan prevailing 10-7 in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters on his way to taking the title for the fifth time.

O’Sullivan has since gone on to claim a further three major titles, including an eighth UK Championship and Masters to set up the potential for a first seasonal Triple Crown heading to The Crucible in April.

The world number one also triumphed at the World Grand Prix in January to take his tally of career ranking titles to a record-extending 41.

Since that Grand Prix success, ‘The Rocket’ pulled out of both the German Masters and Welsh Open for personal reasons, but is back in action this week seeking the Players Series bonus.

O’Sullivan opened up with a 6-2 victory over China’s Zhou Yuelong, producing a high break of 136 in the process, and is now eyeing a first ranking win over Selby since their infamous 2020 World Championship semi-final.

Selby is hoping this is the week he finally ends his wait for an elusive maiden ITV-televised title.

He came agonisingly close at the British Open last October, losing out to Mark Williams in the final, while he has also reached the semi-finals at the European Masters and Shanghai Masters this season.

The four-time World champion is bidding to progress beyond the quarter-final stage at the Players Championship for the first time, having kicked off his campaign with a 6-3 defeat of Barry Hawkins in Round One.

The world number five defeated O’Sullivan in the final of the 2020 Scottish Open – the most recent of his 11 wins from their 30 previous meetings.

The match gets under way from 7pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 frames, with either John Higgins or Zhang Anda awaiting the winner in the Semi-Finals.
