Ronnie O’Sullivan faces Zhou Yuelong for the third time this season when they collide in the Players Championship first round on Tuesday.

The Rocket prevailed in deciding frames at the UK Championship and World Grand Prix on his way to winning both tournaments, adding to his triumphs at the Shanghai Masters and Masters this season.

In doing so, O’Sullivan also maintained his perfect record in the head-to-head, having now recorded six unanswered victories over Zhou.

Although, the Chinese will have taken positives from both results, given he had only won two frames in the four previous encounters between the players.

Having withdrawn from the Welsh Open, O’Sullivan returns to action this week aiming to extend his 15-match winning streak since losing to Zhang Anda in the International Championship semi-finals.

After missing out last year, he is looking to complete a hat-trick of Players Championship titles, having also triumphed in 2018 and 2019, and been runner-up to John Higgins in 2021.

The seven-time World champion has fond memories of this venue, compiling that memorable 147 in the deciding frame of his 2007 UK Championship semi-final against Mark Selby on his way to claiming the fourth of his record-breaking eight titles.

As for Zhou, not only is he eyeing a first win over O’Sullivan, but also a maiden success at the Players Championship, with his previous appearances in 2021 and last year culminating in first-round exits.

The world number 21 came close to landing his first ranking silverware at the Scottish Open in December, suffering a heart-breaking 6-5 defeat in the semi-finals to eventual champion Gary Wilson, who recovered from needing snookers to prevail on the final black.

Zhou also reached the UK Championship and English Open quarter-finals, and knows he will have to produce his optimum performance levels to stand any chance of matching that performance this week at the very least.

The winner of this match will play either Barry Hawkins or Mark Selby in the quarter-finals.

Play gets under way at 7pm GMT on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Telford International Centre.
