Judd Trump looks to maintain his dominant record over Shaun Murphy when they go head to head in the Players Championship quarter-finals.
A tasty last-eight clash at the Telford International Centre on Thursday sees a battle between the two-time winners of this event.
The recent head-to-head record certainly favours Trump, who has prevailed in each of the last six meetings between the players – including all three this season at the Northern Ireland Open and Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters, as well as the Shanghai Masters final.
That will boost his confidence heading into this clash as he continues his quest for a record third Players Championship title, having already lifted the trophy in 2017 and 2020.
It began for Trump, who is the only player to have appeared in every edition of this event since it became the Players Championship eight years ago, with a 6-2 victory over Scottish Open champion Lei Peifan, in which he made breaks of 139, 114, 80 and 74.
Meanwhile, Murphy claimed what proved to be a crucial 6-4 win over Barry Hawkins in the opening round.
As well as withstanding the Hawk’s fightback from 3-0 down to level at 4-4, the Magician ensured he will appear at the Crucible as a seeded player, having been in danger of falling out of the top 16 in recent weeks.
Murphy won this tournament when it was the Players Tour Championship Finals in 2011, and again in 2023, while he also boasts fond memories of Telford, where he won the second of his fourth Triple Crown titles at the 2008 UK Championship.
He will hope that serves as inspiration as he aims to snap his six-match losing streak against Trump.
A showdown with either John Higgins or Xiao Guodong awaits the winner of this clash in the Players Championship semi-finals.
The match breaks off at 7pm GMT on Thursday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Telford International Centre.
