Williams and Ding do battle once more on Monday (Every Second Media/Alamy Live News)

Mark Williams locks horns with Ding Junhui in a tasty first round clash at the Players Championship in Telford on Monday.

The pair meet in the opening round of an elite 16-man event for the second time already in 2025, having played out an epic clash at the Masters in January.

Ding recovered from 5-4 down to prevail 6-5 at Alexandra Palace, the same scoreline by which he also beat Williams in their previous showdown at the 2023 UK Championship.

Neutrals will be hoping for another closely fought encounter at the Telford International Centre, though neither player will want to be on the wrong end of the scoreline, having both suffered first-round exits at the World Grand Prix earlier this month.

Ding, who returned to the winner’s circle at the International Championship earlier this season, won this event when it was entitled the Players Tour Championship Finals in 2013, recovering from 3-0 down to stun Neil Robertson in the final.

However, the Chinese has lost each of his last four matches in the tournament, though Williams’ last four such games have yielded just one victory.

Along with a modest Players Championship record of recent years, the Welshman also arrives in Telford enduring a difficult spell of form, having fallen at the first hurdle in four of his last five events.

Nevertheless, Williams will not be affected by that and will look to draw inspiration from his triumph at the Champion of Champions back in November, and what was the season’s most recent ITV-televised tournament.

A quarter-final showdown with either defending World champion Kyren Wilson or reigning Players Championship winner Mark Allen awaits whoever should prevail from this contest.

The match breaks off at 7pm GMT on Monday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Telford International Centre.
