Mark Allen launches the defence of his Players Championship title with a blockbuster first round match against Kyren Wilson on Monday.
The standout tie of the opening round at the Telford International Centre pits the defending champion against the reigning Crucible king.
Allen lifted this trophy 12 months ago – adding to his Players Tour Championship Finals success eight years earlier – following a 10-8 victory over Zhang Anda in the final.
Although, despite triumphing at the Riyadh Season Championship and reaching a further five semi-finals this season, the Pistol does not return to Telford in the strongest of form.
Indeed, his first-round exit at the World Grand Prix earlier this month – where he lost four successive frames from 2-0 up against Jimmy Robertson – represented a fourth defeat in five matches.
That is something Wilson will look to pounce on, as the Warrior aims to add this event to his ever-growing silverware collection.
The reigning World champion has not looked back since his fairy-tale Crucible triumph, winning the Xi’an Grand Prix, Northern Ireland Open and German Masters this season.
Although, his momentum has stalled in recent weeks with earlier exits than expected at the World Grand Prix, World Open and Welsh Open.
Nevertheless, he will certainly want to embrace the opportunity to get back to business at the Players Championship, where he is a two-time semi-finalist and hope that eventually culminates in him adding his name to the roll of honour.
Wilson was a dominant 4-0 winner when the players last met at the 2023 British Open, though you would expect a much tighter contest this time around.
Mark Williams or Ding Junhui awaits the winner of this mouth-watering showdown in the Players Championship quarter-finals.
The match breaks off at 7pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Telford International Centre.
