Ronnie O’Sullivan launches his Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters campaign against the in-form Joe O’Connor in Jeddah on Tuesday.

The Rocket is set for what will be only his third match of the season, and aiming to repeat the exploits of his first appearance in Saudi Arabia 17 months ago.

Indeed, O’Sullivan was the inaugural winner of the Riyadh Season Snooker Championship (then known as the World Masters of Snooker) after beating Luca Brecel 5-2 in the final.

The seven-time World champion will now look to go deep in Jeddah, having lost to eventual winner Kyren Wilson in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals last time out.

However, O’Sullivan does face a tough opening task in O’Connor, who has made a strong start to the 2025-26 campaign.

The Leicester cueist has won 13 of his opening 14 matches, including a 5-0 whitewash of Sanderson Lam to set up this showdown.

In fact, the only defeat he has suffered thus far came courtesy of a 3-1 reverse against Stephen Maguire in the Championship League final last month.

Ironically, it was in the 2024 invitational edition of the Championship League that O’Sullivan and O’Connor met for the only previous time, with the latter prevailing a narrow 3-2 victor.

That, along with his impressive early-season form, will give the world number 28 confidence in his quest to claim the scalp of the Rocket on a bigger stage at what is being dubbed as snooker’s ‘fourth major’.

A showdown with either Mark Allen or Chang Bingyu awaits whoever prevails from this encounter in the sixth round.

The match breaks off at 5.30pm BST on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of nine frames at the Green Halls in Jeddah.
