Trump and Murphy collide in Riyadh
Judd Trump begins his quest for a fifth title of the season when he faces Shaun Murphy in the Saudi World Masters of Snooker quarter-finals.
The Ace has been the joint-most successful player this term, with his four trophies only matched by Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Trump consecutively won the English Open, Wuhan Open and Northern Ireland Open during a remarkable October, before adding the German Masters to his silverware collection last month.
The world number two has also been runner-up at the World Grand Prix, European Masters and Champion of Champions, where he was a 6-4 winner over Murphy in the quarter-finals – and what was their most recent encounter.
That showdown provided two centuries and a further eight breaks over 50, and neutrals will be hoping for similar levels of high quality here.
Murphy has endured a mixed 2023-24 season, which began with him capturing the first silverware at the Championship League.
However, the Magician has struggled to build on that momentum. Despite reaching the Masters semi-finals, he has failed to progress beyond the last 16 of any ranking event.
That included back-to-back first-round exits at the German Masters and Welsh Open, which culminated in him failing to qualify and earn the opportunity to defend his Players Championship crown.
Nevertheless, he does tend to save his best for the big occasion and he has prevailed in two of his last three meetings with Trump over the best of seven frames – most recently a 4-2 win in the 2017 Gibraltar Open final.
The winner of this match will play either Ronnie O’Sullivan or John Higgins in the Saudi World Masters of Snooker semi-finals.
Play gets under way at 7pm GMT on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of seven frames at the Global Theatre in Boulevard City, Riyadh.
