Wonderful Wakelin soars past Chang to Scottish Open title
Chris Wakelin cruised to the Scottish Open title on Sunday, following a dominant 9-2 victory over Chang Bingyu in Edinburgh.
The world number 17 captured the second ranking silverware of his career, lifting the Stephen Hendry trophy after reeling off eight successive frames at the Meadowbank Sports Centre.
Wakelin, who also triumphed at the Shoot Out in January 2023, equalled his biggest payday after landing the top prize of £100,000.
The 33-year-old became the 21st different winner in the Home Nations Series, having gone one better than his run to the 2023 Northern Ireland Open showpiece.

“It was an incredible game. I felt like I got on top of him early in the match,” he said.
“That first session was a bit of a killer. I came out tonight and I was determined to get the job done quickly and as pain free as possible. I’m absolutely delighted with how I played today.
“I believed in myself ahead of the match. Just believing in myself over the last couple of years has been the catalyst.”
Wakelin was appearing in his fourth ranking final, and drew first blood with a neat clearance of 73.

Meanwhile, Chang had enjoyed a breakthrough week in the Scottish capital, having defeated Stephen Maguire, Si Jiahui, Kyren Wilson, Mark Selby and Mark Allen on the way to the showpiece.
After levelling, a break of 107 – his 11th century of the week – put him in front, though Wakelin responded with 66 to square things up again at 2-2.
It was one-way traffic thereon. The world number 17, who secured his return to the top 16 this week, hit breaks of 96, 70 and 66 for a commanding 6-2 advantage at the conclusion of the afternoon session.
Chang, who was set to climb into the world’s top 64 having only returned to the tour this season, was aiming to become the 10th different Chinese winner of a ranking event.

However, he simply had no answer to Wakelin. Runs of 50 and 67 moved him to the brink of victory, which he secured with a magnificent clearance of 104.
“I didn’t think I could make it this far or be in this final,” Chang added. “I’m happy because I’ve made huge progress.
“Tonight wasn’t my night and Chris played very well. I couldn’t leave him any chances.”
