Mark Selby casts doubt over his playing future following Tour Championship exit

Ali Carter and Barry Hawkins do battle on Monday for the right to face Ronnie O’Sullivan in this year’s Tour Championship quarter-finals.

The two players will lock horns at Manchester Central for the 21st time in professional competition, though only the eighth outside the Championship League and Shoot Out.

Five of the previous seven also came in the opening round of the respective tournament, including their most recent encounter at the 2015 Masters, which Carter won 6-1.

The Captain would love another crack at O’Sullivan for the first time since the pair were embroiled in a public spat following the Rocket’s 10-7 victory in the Masters final.

Also runner-up to Judd Trump at the inaugural Wuhan Open this season, Carter is back at the elite tournament and targeting his first victory, having lost 10-4 to eventual runner-up Kyren Wilson at this stage 12 months ago.

The world number nine won his only previous showdown with Hawkins over the best of 19 frames, prevailing 10-9 on his way to reaching the Crucible final in 2008.

He will hope that proves a good omen against the reigning European Masters champion, who has also been a semi-finalist at the Northern Ireland Open and Champion of Champions this term.

Those deep runs have helped secured a second appearance at the Tour Championship, and first since 2021.

Hawkins reached that year’s semi-finals where, despite three centuries and a further five breaks over 50 helping him to a 9-6 advantage, he was eventually edged out 10-9 by O’Sullivan.

A victor over both players in Crucible finals – repeating the feat against Hawkins in 2013 – the Rocket again stands in the way of whoever comes through this best-of-19 encounter at Manchester Central.

Play gets under way at 1pm BST on Tuesday with the opening eight frames, before playing to a conclusion from 7pm.
